School Testing Situations

When it comes to drug and alcohol high school testing , what is more important: Protecting constitutional rights or protecting students? The consensus from students is surprising. There are just as many students for random drug testing as against and in some schools, more students are for random testing than not. The same opinion varies among parents, counselors, coaches and teachers.

There is a big majority of some schools’ who believe there is a big alcohol and a drug problem affecting students. Recent high profile court decisions have determined that it is unconstitutional to randomly test students for drugs and alcohol. The schools that were randomly testing students were testing students who were involved in extracurricular activities- meaning these students had the choice to participate, unlike regular classes required by law. Private schools also fell into this category.

Because the school is private, different laws and regulations differ from public, government-run schools, so they were able to randomly test students. The schools who were randomly testing students all acted on “reasonable cause,” like obvious evidence of increased drug or alcohol use on campus. Now, with recent constitutional cases, schools who were about to begin random alcohol/drug testing have postponed their program until further decisions by state and federal courts.

Students were previously tested using two different methods; urine testing and mouth swab tests for saliva testing. Previously, using either urine or the swabbing tests would only measure very recent alcohol or drug use. Now with EtG alcohol and drug testing, ethyl glucuronide testing, a sample now is able to test several days of prior alcohol and drug use, where it wasn’t possible before. Both urine and swabbing testing are intrusive and cost money to perform. Under current alcohol high school testing rules, a student who tested positive would not face criminal charges, but face varying lengths of suspensions from sports or other extra curricular activities. The student would still attend classes but also be required to attend an approved treatment program.

Hair alcohol testing is the latest and most accurate form of testing on the market today. With only an inch worth of scalp hair from a student, as much as 30 days of alcohol and drug use can be revealed using EtG testing. The instrument used for hair alcohol testing is called a liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, it is a sensitive machine used for testing the smallest of particles in a sample. Besides schools, lawyers, social workers and employers are finding that this type of hair alcohol testing is a far superior way to test someone for recent as well as past alcohol and drug abuse. Plus, hair alcohol testing is by far the least intrusive way to test someone’s metabolites.

Until there is a consensus in the U.S. courts over the rights of students with regards to random alcohol and drug testing, parents, teachers and coaches can only encourage students to abstain with the threat of other consequences or perhaps it will be a peer issue to threaten each other, “continue to abuse and we are all tested via police force, not just by a concerned counselor.”

The other day I was thinking of ideas for my college speech class and I thought of an crazy idea that kids really don’t need homework to be good in school. As I was talking to my college professor he started to think about the topic and thought that it really was a good fact and I should do some research on the topic. As I was looking into the idea i came across the idea that kids really don’t do homework at all they spend about 10 minutes on school nights doing homework and less than 5 on weekends. Homework opponents argue, among other things, that homework does not necessarily promote good study habits in children. In some cases, for example, homework increases family tension, especially when tired and overburdened parents find themselves resorting to nagging their reluctant children into completing their homework.

Certainly, teachers should not be pressured into assigning homework simply because of societal expectations or only because it is the policy and practice of most formal school systems. Homework, however, has the potential to help a child do well in school if the assignments are meaningful, have a purpose and come with clear instructions. Parents may play a significant role by modeling a love of learning and by being lifelong learners. I feel as an overall person that kids need to stop doing homework and should just focus on test. But, as a student i feel like homework raises my grade and if it wasn’t for homework I feel like my grade would be lower and wouldn’t be as high as it is right now. As I’m getting to the point people should just give up on homework, but I do really feel like it could go either way on the cases. Last, I just feel that we need homework but we just don’t need loads of homework, because i spend about 2 hours a night spending time on homework and studding for that big chemistry test.

Every now and then kids, such as kids in elementary school and junior high, tend to argue about private high schools. For example, some may say that attending private high schools will get them into a better college, which I’m going to talk about here.

Attending a private high school doesn’t have much at all to do with getting you into college. People who have been home-schooled or attended regular high schools and have managed to get into prestigious colleges. Attending good colleges has to do with the following:

Your grades. Getting good grades in high school has lots to do with getting yourself into a good college. If you’re getting C’s and D’s in high school, you may not even graduate from high school, let alone get into a good college. If you get lots of good grades, then you’ll probably be able to get yourself into a somewhat decent college. Don’t be a slacker. Doing just a bit of work and putting in some effort into everyday can go a long way.
Your SAT/PSAT and ACT scores. This is the most important thing for you to worry about if you want to get yourself into a good college. If you score well on these tests, then you will probably get scholarships from a college. However, if you don’t score high enough on the SAT/PSAT and/or ACT, then you probably won’t get any scholarship at all. If you want to get into a good school and/or get a scholarship, you must go beyond “passing”. Remember, passing is the norm. It’s considered bad if you don’t pass/graduate from high school, and nothing special if you do. Go beyond the norm.
What classes you take. Getting yourself into certain colleges also has to deal with what classes you took and what you are good at. For example, if you took a bunch of art classes in high school and you wanted to go to a college like Harvard or Ohio State University, then you’re not going to get admitted. For engineering colleges, you’ll need to take some form of sciences and do well in math. For business colleges, you’ll need to take economics and business classes in high school, as well as math.
How well known your high school is. A private high school, like Cathedral in Indianapolis, may not be as well known as a public high school. A public high school like Carmel High School, in Carmel, Indiana, is quite well known. It is currently in the top 10 best high schools in the state of Indiana. So, if you attend a school well known to many colleges, then you will have a better chance than getting into a good college. If you attend an unknown private high school, then you may not get admitted into the college of your choice.

It’s up to you to get good grades in high school. It’s up to you whether you score decently on the SAT/PSAT and ACT tests. It’s up to you about what classes you take. Through all this, it’s up to you to what kind of college you get into. It’s up to you – not your school.

The Alabama High School Graduation Exam (ASHGE) will soon be history, but not just yet.  Thousands of students still have to pass it to graduate.  Here’s how to get ready.

Social Studies – The toughest test on AHSGE is all about history.  Hit the books and review US history from Columbus to World War II.  Key in on the big events of the past 250 years, learning most important names and events.  Don’t spend too much time on dates; there are few tested.  And a quick review of Alabama history is important.  There are several questions about the most important people and events in the home state.

Science – The AHSGE science test shifted a few years ago from an all-subjects test to a one-subject test.  Now the focus is biology.  Borrow a biology book or search the web to review key terms and processes from biology.

Reading and Language – Literature, grammar, and writing are all tested on the AHSGE reading and language test.  Review key literary terms, periods of American literature, basic grammer skills, and get focused on paragraph development and editing to ace this portion of the test.

Mathematics – A bit of arthmetic, algebra, and geometry work together to make the AHSGE math test.  Be sure you understand fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions – how to turn one into the other.  Practice using measurement to determine area, perimeter, and volume.  There is a great deal of emphasis on different types of angles, too, so be sure to review those.  Finally, review basic algebra:  functions, slope, graphing, and factoring can all appear on the test.

Study – You grades go up when you study before you take classroom tests, right?  Same thing here.  Vocabulary study is especially important. Use review materials that you get from your teachers, that you purchase, or find on the web.  And start studying early; if you have a question, you’ll be able to talk it over with your teacher before test day and get one more question right.

Test Taking Skills – Don’t get scared on test day, but do take the AHSGE seriously.  This is your diploma!  Read the questions carefully, choose the best answer, and never, never, never leave one blank. Plan ahead so that you can go to bed one hour earlier than usual each day of the test.  If you come into the room fresh and wide-eyed, your score will go up.

Parents can provide a college preparation during high school for every student, which can benefit every child. If they ultimately don’t go to college, then your homeschool education will be the only education they get. Make it great! They’ll be well prepared for life and their civic responsibilities. Plus, if they ever change their mind and decide to go to college, they will have a much easier time getting in. On the other hand, some parents know early on that their children are college bound. For them, a college prep education can influence the quality of the colleges they get admitted to. College preparation can benefit everyone!

During eighth and ninth grade, find out about your own state requirements and make a plan to meet those requirements. Review the common college expectations for recommended high school courses. For help with courses, see my previous article on Planning High School Courses.

Look over your high school plan at least once a year. As you begin to focus on college and career goals, you may need to adjust your plan slightly each year as you go. Budding nurses and engineers may need to buckle down with math, and missionary preparation could benefit from more foreign languages. So review it yearly while you relax and enjoy a lifestyle of learning. Try to include essay writing in your plan. The ability to write a few paragraphs quickly can be beneficial for both college and career dreams.

High school testing can cause stress for parents AND students. What test do you take when, and how do you know? Most of those answers are found on two websites: The College Board and ACT. Take the PSAT in 10th grade for fun, but only the PSAT taken in 11th grade will count toward the National Merit Scholarship. It’s only offered once each year, so register before September of the student’s junior year, in 11th grade. College admission tests, the SAT and ACT, are often taken in 11th grade and repeated if necessary. Take some time to think about additional subject tests to measure knowledge in specific areas. SAT 2 Subject tests are best taken immediately after you complete each subject. So for example, take the SAT 2 in French right after you finish studying French. Consider taking AP exams when you finish courses as well. They are more intensive subject tests, but they can earn college credit!

You want your kids to be well-rounded, and the colleges want that too! Encourage your child to volunteer for community service. Consider employment, internships or apprenticeships. Encourage activities like sports, music, art, and other experiences. College love to see kids are passionate about something. They can see this elusive “passion” in extra-curricular activities that students continue through all four years of high school. The Washington Post suggests that it’s best to focus on one or two areas to specialize in, rather than doing a little of everything.

Finding a college is more than watching where your friends and neighbors go to school. Take your sophomore or junior to a college fair, or search online for the perfect college match for your student. Once you have some possibilities, visit the college in person. Visiting is the only way to see if it’s a perfect match. Try to whittle down the list to a handful of colleges by the end of junior year. When you visit, ask about their homeschool admission policy. We all know we “should” be saving for college, but we certainly have varying degrees of success doing it! You can look for scholarships at any time, but if finances are a huge concern, you may want to really work on a scholarship search during sophomore and junior year. When you are looking at colleges, don’t be afraid of private schools. They often give significantly better financial aid than public schools, and often their prices are comparable. Forbes Magazine published an article called “The World’s Most Expensive Universities” that explains, “Those costs reflect a trend among private American universities–charge a stratospheric tuition fee, then offer a generous financial aid package.” So don’t be afraid of the list price of a school. In January of senior year, the parents should complete the FAFSA. This IRS-style form will help colleges determine how much money the government thinks you can afford to pay for college – often with hilarious results!  The FAFSA will be used to determine how much financial aid the colleges will give you.

Once you decide what colleges your child will apply to, ask those colleges what high school records they want from you. It can vary significantly, and there is no way to know unless you ask. They may only ask for a transcript. Some colleges will also want a simple reading list, but others will want exhaustive course descriptions and grading criteria. Some college will have very strange and unique requirements. Find out their requirements early so that you can give them what they want. That’s why I always recommend keeping everything in high school – you never know what they will want. One college asked me for an English paper that I had graded. Another college wanted subject tests in many different areas. Like a boy scout, be prepared! At the very end of homeschooling, at the end of senior year, remember to send the college a final transcript that includes graduation date, final grades and grade point average.

College applications are long and complicated. Admission essays are tedious and time consuming. Plan to begin the application process during September of senior year to allow enough time to complete it in a timely fashion. It’s possible to write college application essays in junior year if you want to plan ahead. You can always edit it again right before submitting it. Start early. Each college may require two or more essays, and their application can be many more additional pages. Sometimes admission and financial aid decisions are “first come, first served” so it can really pay off to plan ahead. I encourage students to finish applications by January first whenever possible, be in the best possible position. The college deadline may be later, but they will be swamped with applicants near the deadline. They can give your application a more relaxed reading if you turn it in early.

Homeschoolers have the advantage in college preparation! We are intimately involved in the education of our children. We really know their strengths and weaknesses, their goals and passions. We can provide the best guidance counseling for them because we are love-givers, not care-givers. In school settings, a guidance counselor may know a lot about tests and deadlines, that’s true. But they have hundreds of students to help, and they may speak to each student only once or twice. Just like our wonderful student-teacher ratio, our student-advisor ratio just can’t be beat!

Be brave! Parents know their child better than anyone, and they are perfectly capable of providing the guidance they need through high school. You can do it!

Using a credit card, he sat down at the break table and took a series of tests which he asked everyone who worked there to give him the answers to the questions or to work out the math problems. Within two hours he was a high school graduate!

A week later, his diploma came in the mail, along with some other papers. One of the other papers was a list of so called “instructors” he had studied under with a date of his so called lessons. All of which was a work of pure fiction. It seems having read through the paper work that he received that in order for him to receive a regular high school diploma he needed to actually complete so many hours of schooling.

He completed none, and in order to get the fat 0.00 fee for his education, the On line high school did not mind fudging the facts a little to comply with whatever laws were demanded of them.

I found the entire idea offensive. Someone getting the same type of diploma that I received for 4 years of hard work in a regular classroom environment.

Over the last few months I have met several other people who have received high school diplomas from various on line schools without even bothering to type in their own answers to the test questions. One young woman had her older sister take the test, and another girl had two recent graduates take her test for her.

While I feel these schools are unethical and are doing a disservice to the people they are taking money from, I am more upset with the people who are willing to help these young men and women cheat the system.

They may feel they are helping out a friend or relative by taking these tests and thus earning these bogus diplomas but in truth they are doing these people a grave injustice. While these people may have a diploma in hand they are still unable to perform the necessary skills that a true diploma would require. Any employer who hires one of these graduates expecting them to be at least semi literate may be sadly disappointed and the “graduate” may find himself fired from job after job.

His diploma will prove to not be worth the paper it is written on.

Tests that put you on stake for having a high school diploma might be disturbing. In order to save you from lose of diploma for failing to pass a basic test, it is better to organize your studies to ensure learning that could lead to diploma. GED free tests are available as offered by some schools and students can check their aptitude by giving sample tests. High school diploma tests are those tests in which students have been assessed whether they have appropriate understanding of the education they want to pursue. Passing the test ensures that student can at leas able to get the qualifications.

Tests are important as exams are important. During the studies, tests are the only way by which students tell their schools that they are getting from studies. High school tests for diplomas are more important in the sense that when someone is a returning student and what is the capability of that student in earning the diploma is required to ascertain.
There are certain factors that require understanding before going for test for diplomas. First, student has to ensure that he has at least basic knowledge of the subjects involved in the diploma, the understanding of the curriculum, and knowledge of basic level subjects in general. In high school diplomas, there are many subjects, like mathematics, biology, physics, chemistry and social sciences etc.

It is not required that student have to have knowledge of all subjects. As students have to decide in which subjects they will be studying for high school diploma, they have to learn some basics of those subjects. This will save both time and energy. Students have to be aligned with the subjects involved in the diploma.

For adult high schools, students have already studied subjects. For them, passing these types of admission tests is easy. In cases, when student have earned credits in the subjects, the way to success for them is easier with respect to other students.

Goethe charter asked to expand into a middle school and take over public school classes at Marina Del Rey Middle school in Los Angeles. Poor kids from African american and hispanic families are declined by charters because of low test scores. Goethe have just about 90% white student body as compared to 90% minorities who attend Marina middle School. Did the supreme court ever ruled that separate is not equal
